The Real World
From the “The Week In Books” column in the Guardian Review (March 13th): “Canongate, the literary indie publisher whose authors include Margaret Atwood, Yann Martel, Barack Obama and Philip Pullman, recently announced it will publish the memoirs of the rapper Dizzee Rascal. Jamie Byng, the imprint’s boss, enthuses about an unusual deal that involves no advance at all but enhanced “back end” earnings, and about the autobiography’s multimedia potential. Due in the autumn, the book will do battle with the long-awaited memoirs of the Auden-faced Rolling Stone Keith Richards, who three years ago was paid an advance variously reported as $5m and $7.3m; seeing it into the world will be Weidenfeld &Nicolson, the imprint George Weidenfeld co-founded 60 years ago with the aim of bringing the writings of the best minds of Europe into Britain’s bookshops.”
